Remote Registration:

  • Pre-recorded lectures will be provided ahead of the live session

  • Exercises and group discussion will be held over zoom and in-person

Summary:

Learn about epidemiological methods with our introductory course, which focuses on exposures and outcomes, and experimental and observational study designs. No prior experience with epidemiological methods necessary!

Where: Courses will be held over zoom and in-person.

When: Thursday, May 16 and Friday May 17 2024

Course Format: Lectures are pre-recorded and hands-on exercises and group discussion will take place during in-person but can also be viewed via Zoom.

No prior experience with epidemiological methods is needed!

Objectives & Goals:

  • Learn how to define epidemiology, explain the role epidemiology plays in public health and gain an understanding of real world applications of epidemiological studies. 
  • Interpret the meaning and application of measurements such as prevalence, incidence, relative risk and odds ratio.
  • Gain a basic understanding of different types of epidemiological study design and methods that are most appropriate given the research question. 
  • Understand the biases associated with different study designs and learn how to maximize validity and reliability within your study.

 

**Special Promotion** 

Upon completion of the workshop, students will have the option to schedule one half hour of complementary consulting for their individual projects with a member of ITE. ITE staff or faculty can help with a variety of topics, including study design or analysis considerations. Additional consulting for clinical projects will be available at a discounted rate.

Emanuela Taioli, MD, PhD

- Professor, Director of the Institute for Translational Epidemiology; Professor, Population Health Science and Policy

Dr. Taioli i

s the Director of the Institute for Translational Epidemiology and Associate Director for Population Science, Tisch Cancer Institute. She is a Professor in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy, and Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai. Dr. Taioli’s research focuses on epidemiology, cancer epidemiology and health disparities.

Maaike van Gerwen, MD,PhD

-Assistant Professor, Otolaryngology


Dr. van Gerwen

is a physician and cancer epidemiologist whose research focuses on thyroid cancer and environmental risk factors. She has experience in literature reviews and meta-analyses.

Xiaotao Zhang, MD, PhD

-Assistant Professor,

Institute for Translational Epidemiology &

Division of Gastroenterology

Dr. Zhang’s research and experience are primarily focused on nutrition, the microbiome, cancer disparities and geriatric oncology. By merging epidemiologic methods with innovative techniques and bioinformatic/statistical strategies, his current research examines the role of biological and modifiable risk factors in cancer disparities and cancer prevention.
